Piper Reads: Mary Is Reading...

Books are a wonderful way for coworkers and friends to share experiences, even when we’re miles, states, and countries apart. Hearing about what someone is reading is like taking a 5-minute vacation. Each week, one Piper team member will answer the question, “What are you reading?” and take you on a well-deserved, 5-minute vacation.

This week Mary is reading Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman.

“…Eleanor dives you right into her life and is delightfully unapologetic about her offbeat opinions and preferences.”

MARY SAYS…

The voice is what grabbed me right away in this book. The main character Eleanor dives you right into her life and is delightfully unapologetic about her offbeat opinions and preferences. She’s odd and out of touch with normal life, which makes for many, many funny moments. There’s also an underlying heartbreak that I’m uncovering about her with each turn of the page. She’s lonely without saying so, which endears me to her and is making me all the more happy when she finds friendship in unexpected ways. I love that I don’t know how I’m going to feel about Eleanor at the end or what she’s capable of—I’m hooked!

AMAZON DESCRIPTION

No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine.

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.
